Il s’agit du poète, humaniste et ambassadeur du duc d’Urbin, Baldassare Castiglione (1478-1529), reconnu pour être l’auteur du Livre du courtisan, publié en 1528 et consacré au portrait de l'homme de cour idéal. Castiglione et Raphaël se sont rencontrés à Urbin, ils partageaient tout deux une même conception de la beauté et de l'harmonie. Cette affinité s'exprime parfaitement dans le portrait étonnamment simple et naturel de Raphaël.
La tenue hivernale du modèle permet de supposer que le portrait fut peint pendant l'hiver 1514-1515 lorsque Castiglione se trouvait à Rome, où Raphaël était actif depuis 1508.

The portrait's subject is the poet, humanist and ambassador, Baldassare Castiglione (1478–1529), famous for writing The Courtier, published in 1528 and dedicated to describing the ideal man of the court. Castiglione and Raphael first met in Urbino, both men sharing the same ideas regarding beauty and harmony. This mutual affinity is perfectly expressed in Raphael's astonishingly simple and natural portrait.
This winter dress suggests that the portrait was painted during the winter of 1514–1515 when Castiglione was in Rome, where Raphael had been working there since 1508.
