The artist Paul-Élie Ranson had little taste for Parisian life, preferring the countryside of Limousin, Charente and l’Ermitage, the home of fellow painter Georges Lacombe.
.
Living near Alençon, Lacombe was surrounded by a large forest, and the two artists roamed daily in search of picturesque scenes. While Lacombe was fascinated by plant life, Ranson populated his forests with depictions of Eve, Diana the Hunter, and fauns and nymphs – as seen in this work.
