As a young woman, Florynce Kennedy applied to Columbia Law School, but she was denied admission because of her gender. She didn’t take the decision lying down, threatening a lawsuit and becoming one of eight women in her class—and the only black student. Her activist spirit carried her throughout life: Kennedy fought for abortion rights, provided legal support to the Black Panthers, and helped found the National Women’s Political Caucus—all while wearing her signature cowboy hat.
