Rinkaiura Beach, in the Nishimuro district of the town of Shirahama, in Wakayama Prefecture, is the only place to see this incredible sunset. Off the shore, the hole in the island of Takashima (sometimes called ‘Engetsuto Island,’ or ‘Full-Moon Isle’) perfectly frames the sun as it sinks below the horizon, especially during the vernal and autumnal equinox. Understandably, it’s a very popular spot for photographers, and an iconic symbol of Shirahama’s natural beauty.
