Today is #MuslimWomensDay, so we’re celebrating inspirational women like Huda Quhshi—photographed here by Gabriela Bhaskar (@dontgabalot)—a Yemeni-American entrepreneur who opened a hijabi salon in Brooklyn, New York. "Women like Huda," explains Bhaskar, "who have grown up as Americans but whose families are from rural areas, are now paving the way for young women in the Yemeni community to pursue higher education, entrepreneurship and careers...In many ways, these women are using the Quran and their religion to navigate cultural traditions that haven't widely been questioned and that empower them to pursue their dreams." Bhaskar began documenting Muslim women in the U.S. after the bodega strikes in 2017; she wanted to focus on positive stories about women triumphing.
