Conjured out of kaolin clay, this 300-year-old gold-pink ‘falangcai’ bowl was thrown and fired at the imperial kilns in Jingdezhen and painted at the imperial workshops beyond the walls of the Forbidden City in Beijing. Executed to perfection for the Kangxi emperor’s personal use, the bowl is the only example of its kind ever recorded. The design of decoratively paired #flowers – narcissus with cinnamon rose, hibiscus, poppy with tuberose, and gardenia with mallow – within four windows set against a radiant pink enamel ground with blue asters was possibly painted by a western Jesuit resident at the court of the Kangxi emperor.
