Madam C.J. Walker became a millionaire from her hair-care company, and she used her position, her profits, and the business itself to address the needs of African Americans in the early 1900s. Working as an authorized Madam C.J. Walker agent gave thousands of black women an opportunity to support themselves, their families, and their communities—in spite of a job market heavily restricted by Jim Crow laws. The Madam C.J. Walker Company also gave charitable donations and encouraged employees to perform charity and activism work. Learn more about Madam C.J. Walker’s philanthropy on our blog, link in our bio. https://s.si.edu/CJWalker
