Photo by @williamalbertallard // Ayacucho, Peru, 1994 // When I look at this image I think back to a Good Friday in Ayacucho, Peru in 1994 when I was photographing an essay on Peru for National Geographic magazine. Ayachuco is famous for its grand Easter Week celebrations. In this instance I was immersed in a candle light procession, three or four people abreast, pushing forward as best they could. I saw a young mother with a baby bundled upon her back and as I focused on her she glanced for a moment to one side, her eyes echoing the angle of the flame of the candle in her hand while from somewhere in the foreground a hand reached out to hold her back. The history of Peru and the struggles of its people might be considered reflected in the gestures found in this image.
