Does anyone know if the @aspca is going to finally support the anti-declawing legislation in NY this year? Each year, they haven't supported it, even though they say that they are strongly opposed to declawing. The ASPCA has changed their declawing position statement often. Here is what they said in 2015. "The ASPCA is strongly opposed to declawing cats for the convenience of their guardians. The only circumstance in which the procedure could be condoned would be if the health and safety of the guardian would be put at risk, as in the case of individuals with compromised immune systems or illnesses that cause them to be unusually susceptible to serious infections.” But then in 2017 they came out with a new position statement that said declawing shouldn't be performed for those human health reasons. They made a new excuse to not support the anti-declawing bill, "Legislation to make declawing illegal, while well-intentioned, can be problematic, because, in rare cases, the procedure may be justifiable as a last resort to prevent euthanasia. There is also no meaningful way to enforce a law that includes this exception." The ASPCA does so many wonderful things for animal welfare and supports many bills that help animals. Why in the world would they stay on the side of the declawing vets and their vet associations on this issue? Why won't they support a bill that is good for the welfare of cats but bad for the pocketbooks of declawing vets??? Please respectfully reach out to the ASPCA and ask them!
