4 year-old Ozzie is a rescued, mixed Labrador Retriever. He was one of the first dogs we photographed before this #yearofthedogs thing was even a project.

We’ve learned a lot since then.

Ozzie was a great and patient teacher. I was a wreck, constantly fiddling around with the lights in my studio, adjusting my camera settings and nervously trying to figure out what I was doing. My wife and faithful dog whisperer Callie put up with me and through it all, Ozzie kept his patient gaze.
I’m often told my photographs make a dog look sad. I’m not sure I agree with that.
To me this photograph of Ozzie is more heroic than it is sad. I look for that sort of thing in dogs and people. And if you’d expect Ozzie to be one of the sweetest and happiest dogs around, you would be right.

Year of the Dogs is my made up name for a personal project celebrating the beauty and character of these amazing creatures we share our homes and families and lives with.
