While photographing in 1990 for the essay “A Season in the Minors,” for National Geographic that appeared in the April, 1991 issue, I started with spring training in Phoenix, Arizona where the Milwaukee Brewers farm teams were based. I made this picture viewed through the chain link fence of a backstop during a spring training game. Each individual link of the fence cast a shadow upon a fabric scrim hung to keep the dust from blowing onto the home plate area. In this light an image was created that has a kind of push-pull effect and if standing close the image loses its specificity. But upon standing farther back, it takes form and clarity. I made only very few frames of this image. I’m not sure how many, but I do wish I’d worked it harder, explored it even further.
