“I think it was probably quite difficult for Philip to take on a completely objective view of this conflict. I don’t think he was there to give balanced coverage. I think his goal was much more to show and document the reality of daily life; to shed light on the actual people living in and with conflict. I think that’s one of the things that makes the picture of the soldier through his riot shield so powerful. There’s a person behind there, not a mechanised tool of war.
