Can bringing poems to the masses be an antidote to our toxic civic culture? Tracy K. Smith is undertaking a multistate journey as the #poetlaureate of the United States. The role is open to interpretation — working under the auspices of @librarycongress, each laureate is given a stipend of $35,000 and support to pursue a project. Smith, the 5th African-American to hold the title, is taking poetry on the road, focusing primarily on rural areas. “This is a strange period where, nationally, we’re being reminded or convinced of the great divisions that separate coastal and urban communities from the central and rural communities,” she said. “I’ve always distrusted that.” She sees poetry as a shortcut to honest conversation. “You want a poem to unsettle something,” the 46-year-old poet told the @nytmag writer Ruth Franklin. She lowered her voice almost to a whisper. “There’s a deep and interesting kind of troubling that poems do, which is to say: ‘This is what you think you’re certain of, and I’m going to show you how that’s not enough. There’s something more that might be even more rewarding if you’re willing to let go of what you already know.’ ” Nadia Blas (@neeksiebeeks) took this portrait of the poet laureate while on assignment for @nytmag.
