The numbers about the ongoing war in Syria are alarming. Since the beginning of the conflict 7 years ago, more than 400,000 people have lost their lives, with 5 million seeking refuge abroad and over 6 million displaced internally, according to a recent report from Human Rights Watch. Various forms of violence continue to permeate daily life across the country, particularly affecting women and children. Some two-thirds of children in Syria are said to have lost a loved one, had their house damaged, or suffered conflict-related injuries. Children who have endured such experiences and have been exposed to significant violence are deprived of a sense of security and susceptible to profound mental distress.

Corpses and human remains were spotted on nearby streets. Stray cats wandered through looted compounds amidst rubble. Burnt smell quite common as a result of an intense U.S.-led bombardment in the surroundings of the National Stadium and the National Hospital, where civilians were kept as human shields. Residents of Raqqa used to made a collective pledge of allegiance to the Islamic State group at the Al-Firdous Mosque, viewed here from a sniper position in a building filled up with fighters for the Kurdish-led, Syrian Democratic Forces, backed by the U.S. government, during the last day of the self-declared capital of the Islamic State, in October last year. The battle for Raqqa ended up in a controversial secret deal between both sides under the gaze of the U.S. and British-led coalition forces.
