Itching for a fast race! . Brief race summary: We decided that we would lead my heat unless someone else went out really fast to give myself more chances of making the final . With 8 in a final- only the first 2 in each of the 3 heats (26 starters) were guaranteed to qualify and then the next 2 fastest times overall. With Olympic Champion Caster Semenya in my heat, winning the heat was going to be especially tough. So a fast race would mean I had another chance to get to the final on time if I missed top 2. . I stuck to the plan and led our heat through the 1st lap in 59. I kept the pace strong through the 2nd lap as some of the pack sped up and went past at 250m to go. I was a bit slow at reacting but pushed home as hard as I absolutely could and finished up in 5th place, less than half a second between me and 2nd place. Our heat was the fastest of the 3 heats (the other 2 were also very quick) with lots of personal bests and a seasons best for me. My time of 2.00.62 was the 7th fastest time out of all the heats, but I missed the final by one spot. . The competition was extra strong this year (I made the final of the last Games with 2.01) and I am so inspired by all the amazing performances, including by Keely Small in my heat, who is only 16 and ran one of the fastest times in the world ever for her age! . Although I was disappointed to have not quite made it through to the finall- I gave it everything and it was an incredible honour to be out there running for New Zealand!!!
