One of my favorite things about Europe is how well it memorializes the events that have taken place here. One of the most effective monuments that I’ve seen so far is the Shoes on the Danube Bank. Conceived by Can Togay and created with sculptor Gyula Pauer, it honors the people killed by the Nazi party in Budapest, Hungary during WW2. Jews (and others) were forcefully removed from their homes and the newly constructed ghettos and ordered to remove their shoes at the edge of the bank. They were then shot and their bodies carried away by the river. To this day, the people of Budapest and tourists visiting, leave flowers, candles and other mementos near the shoes on the river. It really moved me. As difficult as it is to face our ugly past, we must always do so in order to never repeat it.
