Bashi-bazouks were irregulars in the Ottoman army who hailed from lands across the Ottoman empire. In this painting by Paul Joanowits, two soldiers, in all their regalia, converse in an Egyptian setting. During the 19th century, artist-travellers’ fascination for new cultures, and a genuine desire on their part to document in paint their impressions, opened the West’s eyes for the first time to a world that was still relatively inaccessible.
