I was honored to moderate the “young activists panel” at the Embrace Ambition summit, and interview Marley Dias, Madison Kimrey, & Naomi Wadler. We talked about confronting stereotypes, creating new norms, & embracing ambition. The definition of ambitious is the “determination to succeed” & “intending to satisfy high aspirations”. These three incredible young women, Naomi (11), Madison (16) & Marley (13) have heard what ambition means, loud & clear, & embraced it in the most inspiring ways. I was honored, & priveleged to learn from them. Three forces of nature who are passionate, smart, & changing our world. Marley Dias⭐️- As a powerhouse activist & voracious reader, Marley Dias addressed the lack of diversity in literacy. Marley is the founder of #1000BlackGirlBooks and author of “Marley Dias Gets It Done (And So Can You!). After being frustrated that main characters in books she was reading were only "white boys and dogs”, she decided to change that. In November 2015 she launched the #1000BlackGirlBooks campaign – a collection & donation of 1,000 books that feature black girls as the main character. She has now reached more than 11,000 books donated. Madison Kimrey⭐️- A teenage political activist from Burlington, North Carolina. She is the founder of an organization called North Carolina Youth Rock that advocates for the reintroduction of a voter preregistration bill for 16- and 17-year-olds. Kimrey has focused her activism on youth involvement in politics, women’s rights, LGBT rights, & human treatment of animals. Naomi Wadler⭐️- An activist who spoke at the March of our Lives in Washington D.C. She eloquently shared how African American women are victims of prevalent gun violence and yet they never make the front page of a newspaper but are perpetually just a “statistic instead of girls full of potential.” Naomi organized a walkout of more than 60 students at her school with signs that say “Never Again” to stand in solidarity & added a moment of silence to honor Courtlin Arrington, an African America girl, who was shot & killed by a classmate in Alabama. Wadler is an activist educating people to breakdown stereotypes in their communities, media, & beyond.
