If @xavierdolan could direct a film about his life, he says, the opening scene would show the first encounter between his headstrong and emotional Quebecer mother and his Egyptian-born womanizing father, at a bohemian bar in Montreal where his mother had gone to hear his father sing. In an 8-hour interview with @dan_Bilefsky, a Canada correspondent for @ニューヨーク・タイムズ, the prolific Quebec film director talked about his penchant for outsiders and how his lost childhood, buffeted by school bullies, provided inspiration for his art. @xavierdolan — actor, model, director and Cannes wunderkind — has drawn visceral, often disturbing portraits of family life in films such as “Mommy,” “I Killed My Mother” and “Tom At The Farm.” He also directed the music video for @アデル’s “Hello.” (Is now a good time to note that Xavier, who has directed 7 films, is 29?) His first English-language film, “The Death and Life of John F. Donovan,” has an all-star cast, including @ナタリー・ポートマン, @スーザン・サランドン, Kit Harington and Kathy Bates. It tells the story of an 11-year-old boy and his unlikely relationship with a closeted actor, which becomes distorted by scandal. “I wanted to get out of childhood as soon as possible and escape it," he told @dan_bilefsky, "and now that I’m making movies, I’m chasing it.” Visit the link in our profile to read more, and to see more portraits by @renaudphilippe.
