When in Pisa, do what everybody does - visit the Leaning Tower. From this angle it looks more crooked than leaning. The tower is actually the campanile, the bell tower of the city’s cathedral in the foreground. It started leaning during its construction in the 12th century due to the soft ground on which Pisa was built. It’s crookedness comes from attempts by its several architects to stabilize the structure over the 200 years it took to complete - the upper floors having been built with one side taller than the other to compensate for the tilt. Don’t worry, it’s not going to fall over anytime soon as the ground was recently stabilized by an international team of engineers, although they aren’t taking any chances as only 30 people at a time are allowed to climb the 296 steps to the top. I am here for my exhibition on Marco Polo at Palazzo Blu, open till July 1st. #palazzoblu #pisa #towerofpisa #leaningtowerofpisa #worldheritage @palazzoblupisa @thesilkroadjourney @natgeocreative @natgeo_italia
