A highlight of our Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale in May, this painting by Alberto Giacometti of his brother Diego started life as a portrait of the Japanese professor of philosophy, Isaku Yanaihara.

With the original painting completed and signed in 1957, the artist reworked the canvas in 1958, no longer as Yanaihara, but as Diego.

The head of Yanaihara becomes a spectre, still visible below Diego’s collar, haunting the portrait that Giacometti completed of his brother.
