As part of our ongoing #WW1 commemorations, The Royal Archives have put together documents and photographs relating to the visits which King George V and Queen Mary made to the Western Front to meet troops and find out more about their experiences first-hand. The photographs and documents seen here include: - A photograph of King George King George V at the top of Scherpenberg Hill on 3 December 1914. His Majesty visited the Headquarters of the 3rd Division of the British Army there. He said of his view from the hill, ‘It was a remarkably clear afternoon. We were only about three miles from the enemy's trenches. Ypres, Gheluvelt, Wytschaete, Messines & Mont Kemmel being easily seen with glasses…. While on the hill I received a message by telephone from Major Baird & Officers of the Gordon Highlanders in the trenches…I have now seen all the troops out here in the last three days except those actually in the trenches.’ - A telegram sent to troops in advance of the visit by Major Clive Wigram. It reads,'All ranks 1st Battn The Gordon Highlanders Beg you will lay before His Majesty Their Most Loyal and Respectful Greetings' - A ‘Special Order of the Day’ sent from the King on the last day of his visit to all the British and Commonwealth Forces. - A programme outlining the first two days of the King and Queen Mary’s joint visit to the frontline in July 1917. Majesties arrived in France on 3 July, undertaking an extensive 12 day tour, meeting the troops. - A map showing the route which Queen Mary took during her visit to the Armies in the field. The line of the British trenches can clearly be seen on the right of the image. - A handwritten booklet listing the objects included in an exhibition viewed by the King at the Northern Special Works Park of the Royal Engineers where he was shown the latest camouflage techniques on the 6 July 1917 Copyright: The Royal Archives
