Last night, the #StonemanDouglas students at their senior prom were able to briefly leave behind the marches and rallies their school has become synonymous with over the past two-and-a-half months. It was a chance to be ordinary teens during a year that was anything but.
.
Many were hesitant to attend the dance after the Valentine’s Day shooting that killed 17 people. But as the weeks passed, the senior class grew determined to keep the tradition intact.
.
The #Parkland students received support from all parts of the South #Florida community. Volunteers provided hair and makeup for a bit of glamour on Saturday. The dance venue covered the $50,000 cost of hosting the event, while other vendors donated food and decoration services.
.
“It’s the typical high school experience. Even though ours didn’t end typically, this will be a fragment of normality,” 17-year-old Anisha Saripalli said ahead of #prom night. “In the moment, we’re all going to be happy.”
