Want to see one of the oldest living trees on earth in one of the oldest evergreen forests in the world? First, head to Tokyo. Then fly 2 hours away, to the town of Kagoshima on Kyushu, the southern- and westernmost of Japan’s 4 major islands. From there, you board a little twin-propeller plane for another short flight south to Yakushima. With a population of just 13,100, this island distinguished by its curious ecosystem. The eastern side is semitropical. It’s home to dragonfruit trees and trees bearing 2 different kinds of oranges that, along with flying fish, are the island’s culinary specialty. But just 8 miles south is the 1,000-acre #ShirataniUnsuikyo Ravine. The air there is damp and chilly, and smells sharp and piney and sweet. In place of palms and succulents are trees — so many that from the air, the area appears as a dense block of dark green. The trees are, most of them, Cryptomeria japonica, a cedar-like species endemic to Japan known as sugi. What makes this forest exceptional? Many of its trees are #yakusugi, which means they are at least 1,000 years old, and some are #jomonsugi, which means they are thought to be at least 2,200 years old.
