Chen Yifei’s ‘Beauties on Promenade’ – a highlight of our upcoming Hong Kong auctions – connects themes from 1930s Shanghai with the Tang dynasty (618–907 AD), two periods in Chinese history known for their artistic accomplishments and modernity.

Created in Chen’s studio, every aspect in the painting – from the subjects' clothing and hair ornaments to the careful lighting – was arranged meticulously by Chen to create a nostalgic, romantic scene, relating to history and the passage of time.
