Not to be outdone, Big Mac stepped to the plate in the bottom of the inning with a man on and two outs and proceeded to crush a 2-2 pitch off new Giants closer Robb Nen to tie the game at six. Although HR #24 proved to be dramatic, the Cardinals would go on to lose 9-6 in 17 innings.
The next day McGwire was named the NL Player of Week (May 18-24), his third since joining the Cardinals the previous season. During the six-game span, Mark hit .423/.531/1.346 with 8 HRs, 15 RBI & 10 runs scored. #BigMacFlashback
