For the first of two @グッチ shows on French soil, the label’s creative director Alessandro Michele has elected the picturesque Provençal town of Arles, birthplace of the couturier Christian Lacroix and beloved by Impressionists for its Van Gogh-ean cypress trees (slide 3), Cézanne-esque mountain ranges (4) and fields of flowers seemingly plucked straight from a Monet canvas (2). Gucci’s Cruise 2019 show will take place this evening at the Alyscamp, a Roman necropolis - its name comes from the Provençal word ‘Aliscamps’, derived from the Latin ‘Elisii Campi’. That translates in French to Champs-Élysées and in English to the Elysian Fields. So, literally, this is heaven on earth. Or as close as we get, via Gucci.
