Bankable: having featured on Swiss banknotes in the early 20th century, Ferdinand Hodler’s depictions of woodcutters rank among his most recognisable works. While this master of Swiss painting is perhaps best-known internationally for his landscapes, many of his portraits also bear unmistakeable hallmarks, including parallel lines, sharp black outlines and a sense of rhythm and movement.
