I bought this book yesterday and I'm already flying through it. I can't put it down. I have no interest in becoming a parent anytime soon but this book deeply resonates with me. Over the years, I have paid close attention to how bodies and their natural functions are treated by our culture and government. There is so much judgement in general, but there's a very particular kind of scrutiny that comes along with being pregnant. I've seen people ripped apart on the internet (and in real life) for what they choose to eat, the way they look during and after pregnancy, feeding their baby formula whether it's by choice or circumstance and the horrific way women are blamed and expected to grieve in silence if they don't carry to term. Families and parental roles are gendered. Very few places offer helpful resources for people who don't fit into a heteronormative, cis-gendered structure. When reading parenting materials that currently exist, lazy attempts at inclusivity are added into updated introductions. These people are asked to make mental edits and "imagine" their family dynamic. Furthermore, the information we have access to is often contradictory and almost always comes with an unforgiving, critical tone. Morality is infused into every aspect of parenting - do THIS and you're a GOOD parent, do THAT and you're BAD. No matter what, someone is always being shamed, which ultimately holds everyone back. This book shatters the cultural ideas we've been taught to accept with fierce curiosity, fascinating scientific research, refreshing humility and boundless compassion. It challenges what we think we know and provides profound comfort at the same time. Thank you @angelagarbes for giving us the book we ALL need to take a step forward. ❤️
