"Photographing the wild horses of the American Southwest is a joy of discovery. I drove 10 hours to central Utah to find the Onaqui Mountain Wild Horse herd. Stallions often spar for dominance, or, as in this case, fight to defend their mares in the band. The stallion on the left was trying to get cozy with one of the mares belonging to “One Ear” (the cremello horse on the right who has only one ear—his left ear is missing, the tip of his right ear can just be seen in this image). These horses are under continual threat of being rounded up and sold off, or shipped to Mexico for slaughter—may more people recognize the history and beauty of these magnificent horses and fight to keep them running wild and free over our nation’s lands." ? + Photo and text by Richard J.
