I try not to be too serious on the ‘Gram but, as my dad would say: “Everything in moderation, including moderation.” I cannot quite put my finger on why Anthony Bourdain’s death has rattled me so hard today. I did not know the dude, or even watch his shows that often. Perhaps it is because he symbolized the free-spirited, wayfaring, sensitive thinker which I romanticize. But who knows? I do not for a moment claim to understand the depths of Mr. Bourdain’s suffering or the complexity of mental illness. His death is, however, a bitter reminder of life’s impermanence. This cactus and this mountain will wither away into nothingness. Everything that is near and dear to you will be gone. On the surface this sounds scary and depressing but it is not. It is beautiful. Everything in the universe has this in common. Think about that! If we cannot get along with one another, we can at the very least, have compassion for each other knowing that we all share this same cosmic fate. And knowing this truth can set us free from the trivial things in life which cause us so much suffering and take up so much of our energy. Why waste these precious moments riddled with resentment? Why not let go of hatred and strive to go beyond our shallow nature and into a deeper and better place? An objectively better place with less suffering, more creativity and happiness! Knowing we are going to die gives meaning to our lives and makes EVERYTHING a gift. It really does. Stop rushing and take a moment to look at the mountains. Ponder a cactus. Have no reservations and always be open to the parts unknown. R.I.P. Anthony Bourdain.
