The Taktsang Palphug Monastery, or Paro Taktsang, is a Buddhist temple complex which clings to a cliff, 3120 meters above the sea level on the side of the upper Paro valley in Bhutan. It is also known as the Tiger's Nest (Taktsang in Tibetan language literally means "Tiger's lair”). For millennia, Bhutan had been isolated: a land of devout Buddhism and pristine natural beauty, cradled by the Himalayas, which served as a bulwark against both military aggressors and modernity. In 2006, King Jigme Singye Wangchuck shocked his subjects by unilaterally ending Bhutan’s absolute monarchy, leading an effort to draft a constitution and institute free elections, a process that culminated, in 2008, with the country’s first general election. In the same year, the monarchy was handed to Wangchuck’s eldest son Jigme Khesar Namgyel, known as Dragon King, who reigns to this day. The independence of Bhutan has endured for centuries and it has never been colonized in its history.
