A riot of colour and light, ‘Coin de jardin fleuri’ demonstrates the great inspiration that Pierre Bonnard found in the South of France.
.
It was the light of the Cote D’Azur that fascinated him, and that he tried to capture in this work. ‘That southern light,’ he recalled, ‘during certain hours, which – over great spaces – becomes the principal subject’.
.
Pierre Bonnard (1867–1947), ‘Coin de jardin fleuri’, 1912. Oil on canvas, 28 x 24 ¾ in. (71 x 63 cm.). Estimate: £420,000–600,000.
.
