To reveal or not to reveal: René Magritte’s enigmatic use of imagery to create a vision of the world that was uniquely his own challenged conventions of representation in the 20th century. ‘La Belle captive’, executed in 1946, uses one of the artist’s most famous painterly devices, where the concealment of a subject takes the form of a canvas which reveals what it conceals. Magritte emphasises the artificiality of the composition, not least because we know that the sea is in constant motion and so what is shown in the painting cannot be the same as what it conceals.
