Luigi Lucioni and Paul Cadmus probably met as students, and they doubtless shared acquaintances within New York’s circles of queer artists and writers. This evocative portrait of Cadmus, one of the few openly gay artists of his generation, conveys a feeling of intimacy. Using a modern, close-up format, Lucioni modeled his sitter against the geometric backdrop of a creased white cloth, capturing a piercing gaze that is at once mysterious and mesmerizing.
