Sometimes BIG ideas come in small packages, like these patent models.
Between 1790 and 1880, the U.S. Patent Office required inventors to submit both a written specification and a 3D model with their patent applications. These models could be miniature or full scale—although the Patent Office preferred miniature models, for space saving reasons.
During the 1800s, the patent models were on display in the halls of Washington D.C.’s patent office. When interest dwindled, the @スミソニアン博物館 sent its horse-drawn wagon to the Patent Office to collect models. Ultimately, the Smithsonian acquired 10,000 patent models, which we care for today.
