(Part 2) #JungleBrothers were somewhat avant-garde but never too far to the left. Their pre WuTang Lo fi approach was my standard of “realness”. I mean I could HEAR the roaches & spiders crawling the damp floor of the studio space on #StraightOutTheJungle’s “I’m Gonna Do You”—-truth be REALLY told? #WuTang took Jungle’s diy dry n dirty aesthetic, @weareDeLaSoul’s pop culture sense & Tribe’s street approachability & #BlackSheep’s bad boy playfulness approach and built an WUpire. But this release man....it was not good. It wasn’t bad. It just...well what was it? To me this album is the safari rainbow wheel that tests your patience to the hilt and all you wondering is when will it stop. I’ve read interviews during the release of #JBeezWitTheRemedy where they blame the label & yada yada. But I’m like “I don’t think Benny Medina had THAT much power to make y’all fall on y’all own swords. Like no one said cram this song with the harshest white noise spurts. This was still your creative job at work here. I was thinking that maybe this felt like Sly’s #TheresARiotGoinOn in 71. But even as Sly is committing slow motion decades long suicide, he never lost his sense of pop craftsmanship. I then thought this was hip hop’s first radical jazz fusion workout. But even that is wrong for you get sucked in the spiritual release of a Pharoah Sanders 35 min workout. This is too intricate to be a throwaway. It’s neither Sane nor Insane. The worst crime an album can be to me is mediocre: this ain’t even that. (My first hour working w #BobPower mixing our album was “why did you take an #AlanSmithee (look it up kids) on this JB album (he credited himself as Robert Power....on purpose. Before April 2018 Kanye was trolling us all, this lp was the original troll move. You can’t even find it online anywhere. It’s like an urban legend. I’m still wrestling with what this album is trying to be. Maybe it will unfurl in its 40th?
