Seen to the right of this picture captured June 23, 2018 is the 10-meter-long robotic arm of the International Space Station's Kibo laboratory module, which was built by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. The Kibo laboratory module launched to @国際宇宙ステーション on segments - including two space shuttle missions in March and May of 2008 and a third shuttle mission in July 2009.

Kibo - which means "hope" in Japanese - is Japan's first human space facility and enhances the unique research capabilities of our orbiting laboratory. One of the component of Kibo is a scientific airlock through which experiments are transferred and exposed to the external environment of space. Experiments in Kibo focus on space medicine, biology, Earth observations, material production, biotechnology and communications research. This important science and research not only benefits life here on Earth, but will eventually help us send humans deeper into the solar system than ever before.
