Sam Gilliam’s "Carousel State" (1968), a recent gift of the artist to The Met collection, is now on view in Gallery 923. In “Carousel State,” the canvas has been liberated from its stretcher, straddling the wall and our space, draped to hang to a width of 20 feet (6.1 m). An early example of Gilliam’s signature “drape paintings,” this work was made through a novel process of dripping, smearing, staining, and splashing paint onto the raw canvas, often spreading and merging colors by pressing and folding the fabric.
