This charming Roman wall-painting fragment once belonged to #HoraceWalpole, author of celebrated Gothic novel ‘The Castle of Otranto’. Dating to the 2nd century A.D., the lower half is heightened with 18th century Italian decoration showing men, women and a river god at a festival. Research has revealed that it hung in the ‘little library’ at Walpole's magnificent Gothic castle @StrawbHillHouse - rather fittingly overlooking the River Thames. The work is on display in our London galleries ahead of the auction tomorrow #SothebysAncient
