#movementmondays Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a 28-year-old American democratic socialist, activist, educator, and politician of Puerto Rican descent. On Tuesday, June 26th, this Bronx-born Latina stunned the nation by defeating one of the senior leaders in the House, Joseph Crowley, in the Democratic primary for New York’s 14th District. From growing up in the Bronx where the odds are set against you, to attending Boston University, to advocating childhood education and literacy in her borough, to starting a children’s book publishing company that portrays the Bronx in a positive light, to working as an organizer for Senator Bernie Sanders presidential campaign, to helping support her family by working as waitress, to rejecting corporate money and starting a grassroots campaign, to ruthlessly going door-to-door persuading as many voters to show up at the polls; Ocasio-Cortez has continuously hustled for her community and is truly a woman of the people. Her platform stands on abolishing ICE, federal jobs guaranteed, and “Medicare for all.” In her powerful victory speech she told her supporters, "This is not an end, this is the beginning. This is the beginning because the message that we sent the world tonight is that it's not OK to put donors before your community," She went on to say, “You have given this country hope, you have given this country proof that when you knock on your neighbor’s door, when you come to them with love, when you let them know that no matter your stance, you are there for them - that we can make change.” Ocasio-Cortez is an inspiration.
