David Bowie had a lifelong affinity for American culture, from his early love of Elvis Presley and Little Richard to his twenty-year residency in New York City. Today he lifts his glass to the United States flag in this promotional image for his 1975 album “Young Americans.” The album’s new sound (influenced by Philadelphia soul) and Bowie’s collaboration with American musicians marked a turning point in his ongoing quest for freedom of expression.
