Image by @beverlyjoubert. Trails etched in salty mud. The shallow pans of the Makgadikgadi tell the story of the passing of thousands of zebras - all following an ancient urge to move with the rains over vast distances towards fresh grass and important minerals. The migration was one of the biggest in the world but fences were erected to keep cattle and wildlife separate. For years this resulted in huge numbers of zebras and wildebeest dying as they tried to follow their ancient paths. Now, decades later a fence has been dropped and immediately, remarkably, the migration has begun again. It is not as vast as is was in the 1960s, but if the urge remains, it can be possible to see it return to its former glory.
