Yeni González left her home in rural Guatemala in mid-May. Days later, she crossed the U.S. border with her 3 young children. They were picked up by @customsborder she said, and taken to a detention center near Yuma, Arizona. At 5 one morning, agents woke the kids and took them away. Despite @ドナルド・トランプ’s executive order ending separations and a judge’s order calling on federal authorities to put families back together in no more than 30 days, most families have not been reunited. But this week, after 5 weeks apart, Yeni’s family became the rare exception. The swift reunion was the result of her family’s efforts and the energetic work of a group of New York-area mothers who heard her story on the radio. They raised money to cover her $7,500 bond and organized a volunteer-powered caravan to drive her to NYC. Our reporter @correality and photography intern @ga.briella covered the first and last legs of the 4-day journey. Yeni said that the people she met on the trip wanted to impart the message that there were people in the U.S. who cared about what had happened to her. Their meetings often ended with tearful hugs. “New York,” she said in Spanish when she spotted the skyline from a car. “My whole heart is there.” Visit the link in our profile to read the full story.
