In the July 13, 1953 issue, 65 years ago this week, LIFE ran a feature about the population boom in Los Angeles - "A NEW MAYOR...A NEW COUNCILWOMAN... AND 400 NEW ANGELS EVERY DAY. According to LIFE, "What is really startling about the influx is that an average of 400 people have been moving into the Los Angeles area every day for 13 years. Since 1946 Los Angeles' increase in population approximates the total population of two Milwaukees. In terms of new houses built since the end of World War II the Los Angeles area has added more than two Pittsburghs." This image is an outtake from the story. (J.R.
