A Great White Shark attacks a seal decoy off Monomoy Island off of Cape Cod, Massachusetts as part of a predation study conducted by researchers. Since about 2009, this region has become a newly forming hub of white shark activity. The sharks arrive in summer to feed on gray seals. According to historical record, a once robust population of seals here were wiped out in the late 1600s by sealers and have only rebounded in recent years due to the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. Unlike great whites in other regions of the world, the sharks here seem to be using different feeding strategies to hunt the seals, often feeding in shallow water. Despite being a ‘predator the size of a pick-up truck,’ the white sharks of the Atlantic remain largely enigmatic and little is known about their numbers, migration patterns or mating and pupping areas. But this region of Cape Cod is providing a unique laboratory where scientists can study these wild animals and learn answers to many questions.
