We revisit an article about the gorgeous vagabond and perfect artist’s muse: #Nico. Photo by Francesco Mellina in his brilliant book Revealed.

Born Christa Paffgen in 1938, she worked as a seamstress and eventually began selling underwear in the high-end department store KaDeWe in #Berlin Decidedly this was not enough for the young starlet and she became resolute that she was destined for bigger things. As she began to hang around the department store, undeterred, she was eventually spotted by photographer #HerbertTobias. He catapulted her into the wild world of modelling and she was photographed for the likes of Vogue and ELLE. This ultimately lead her to star in her first film as a cameo Fellini’s 'La Dolce Vita’. This film was truly where truly instated herself as an #androgynous blonde bomb-shell, acting as a slight visual diversion from the familiarity of the voluptuous, femme-fatale character played by Anita Ekberg.

Nico’s musical endeavours are ones that are shrouded in an atmosphere of complete and utter cool. Nico met Andy Warhol in New York, and he introduced her to the band that arguably immortalised her: The Velvet Underground. The avant-garde empress sang on their debut eponymous album, which has since been regarded as one of the most influential albums of all time. Nico’s tenure with the band was tainted with musical differences however; Nico was said to take too long in the dressing room, for her ‘good luck ritual’ of burning a candle often delayed performances. Nico was also wryly deaf in one ear, which became the butt of a few jokes from the other band members.
