This medieval Italian town is getting ready for liftoff. ? In July, Italian aerospace companies signed an agreement with @virgingalactic to take space tourists with about $250,000 to burn on suborbital flights offering vistas of the curvature of the Earth and about 5 minutes of minimum gravity. 46 sites around Italy were considered. The winner: Grottaglie, a small town known for its handmade ceramics. @richardbranson, Virgin’s founder, has said that 600 people are on standby to take off from the original launchpad in New Mexico next year, followed about 2 years later by Italy. And on Monday, Italy’s prime minister, @giuseppeconte_ufficiale, stood next to President @ドナルド・トランプ and talked about “launching, as soon as possible, new planes that, crossing the atmosphere, will be able to connect Italy and the United States in an hour and a half.” Italian supporters talk of an ancillary industry of flight simulators, space research trips, small satellite launches, research universities and an Italian fleet of suborbital spaceships. “We hope it happens,” said Enza Fasano, a master potter of Grottaglie’s venerable Fasano ceramics empire. But she added that the city had a lot of work to do. She asked where our reporter @jasondhorowitz was staying. “Your B&B is terrible,” she told him.
