I Want to Eat Your Soul | As mysterious Aphex Twin artworks crop up over the city centre, we were reminded of one of our favourite, albeit macabre music videos: 'Come to Daddy'. The track, originally intended as some sort of 'crappy death metal jingle' became one of Richard James' best known songs, seemingly to his own utter bewilderment. In doubt down to the video that accompanied it, we feel. A terrifying triumph in anti-CGI, it gathers the own eerie experiences of the director Chris Cunningham. Drawing on his work with and affiliation for horror heroes like Clive Barker, David Cronenburg and Stanley Kubrick, the video is a chilling display of prosthetic perfection. There's a dash of Hellraiser, a dose of Freddy Krueger and best of all, it's set in the now-demolished Thamesmead estate. The same estate A Clockwork Orange was set. Interestingly, when shown the estate the council asked them not to portray the area in a negative light... ahem. Moreover, it has been reported than Cunningham himself was chased as a 16-year-old by a young child with a hammer in a forest. Which, no wonder, is why this music video is so addictively haunting. It's personal. It pairs ominously well with the upsetting and uncomfortable industrial noise of the track. It rerouted the careers of both the artist and director, and changed the way music videos have been regarded ever since. We won't spoil it any further for those who haven't seen it, just promise to check it out. #UndergroundEngland #UndergroundShoes #UndergroundShoe #Underground #AphexTwin #CometoDaddy #ChrisCunningham
