1. Dürer showed talent at an early age. By 13 years old, he was creating confident silverpoint self-portraits.

2. In addition to printmaking, Dürer was a fine painter and, in his final years, wrote numerous books about art.

3. His famous depiction of a rhinoceros was drawn from imagination. Dürer never saw the animal himself and his version came with many fanciful additions, including skin that looked like armour.

4. Dürer took another artist to court for copying his artwork, prompting the first copyright action in art history.

5. After Dürer died in 1528, aged 56, his friend Pirckheimer penned this tombstone epitaph: ‘What was mortal of Albrecht Dürer lies beneath this mound’.
